It looked like Verlander was reviewing with Giles the importance of staying on top of the ball and squatting deeper with his lower half.
After Peacock closed Sunday’s 4-1 win, Giles avoided divulging specifics about what he and Verlander had worked on.”Sharing our points of view on things,” Giles said. “Gave me some pointers. A little bit here and there.”He said that a “long layoff” before the season is responsible for his falling out of a groove with his mechanics. He had pitched once – the opening day on March 29 – in a span of five days.”I lost my groove from spring training,” he said. “I’m trying to get back into it.”
Giles started slowly last year. He led with his slider and pitched ineffectively. Then he dominated by re-establishing his fastball. From June 8 through the end of the regular season, he had a 1.14 ERA and 12.4 strikeouts per nine innings.His well-documented failures in the postseason, when Hinch passed over him and other formerly reliable relievers in high-leverage situations during the World Series, fueled doubts about him entering 2018.The small sample size so far leaves more than 150 games for Giles to get his groove back.
For months, Hinch thoughtfully has highlighted the semantics and dismantled the cachet surrounding who is the team’s closer. Hinch has maintained a harmonious environment in the bullpen by bestowing Giles with the title but using other relievers, such as Chris Devenski and Peacock, in the most critical innings in relief.The question that creeps in is: How long could this bullpen dynamic last if Peacock proves significantly more effective than Giles?
Peacock pledged his support for Giles as “a great closer” on Sunday, but even if he, Hinch and every Astro call Giles by that moniker, the man used to preserve wins will seize that role. Halting Hosmer: Charlie Morton toyed with Eric Hosmer, the Padres’ best slugger Sunday.Most of the time you don’t want Hosmer up to bat,” Hinch said. “When you pitch him the way Charlie pitched him today – a few finishes breaking balls and the first-pitch fastball for the ground ball with the infield in – when the results are that way, you can’t complain about how he did it.”Morton got Hosmer, who the Padres recently signed for eight years, $144 million, to chase low curves for two strikeouts.”He didn’t seem to pick up the curveball today,” Morton said.
